Exact image sizes for Instagram, Etsy and Shopify
By the EditXo team · Updated 6 October 2026 · 7 min read
Most "image size cheat sheets" are copied from each other and years out of date. This one is taken from the three platforms’ own help pages, read on the date shown at the top, with links so you can check. It covers what each platform accepts, what it recommends, and the fastest way to produce each size in EditXo without uploading your photos anywhere.
The sizes at a glance
| Where | Size (pixels) | Ratio | Limits and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed, square | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 | Uploads wider than 1080 are scaled down to 1080 |
| Instagram feed, portrait | 1080 x 1350 or 1080 x 1440 | 4:5 or 3:4 | Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4; taller is cropped |
| Instagram feed, landscape | 1080 x 566 | 1.91:1 | The widest ratio accepted |
| Instagram story or Reel | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical; keep text away from the top and bottom 250 px |
| Etsy listing photo | 2000 x 2000 (square) or 2667 x 2000 (4:3) | First photo landscape or square | At least 2000 px on both sides; files over 1 MB may fail to upload; transparency shows as black |
| Etsy first photo, minimum | At least 635 x 635 | Any | Smaller first photos rank lower in Etsy search |
| Etsy shop logo / profile | 500 x 500 / 400 x 400 | 1:1 | JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG or HEIC |
| Etsy big shop banner | 1600 x 400 (min 1200 x 300) | 4:1 | |
| Shopify product image | 2048 x 2048 (square) or 2048 x 1536 (4:3) | 1:1 displays best | Up to 5000 x 5000 or 25 megapixels, under 20 MB |
| Shopify collection image | Same limits as products | Keep one ratio across a collection | Shopify resizes copies for each theme slot |
Instagram’s rule is about width and ratio, not a fixed size. Photos are stored at up to 1080 pixels wide. Any aspect ratio between 1.91:1 (wide landscape) and 3:4 (tall portrait) is kept as uploaded; anything outside that range is cropped to fit. So 1080 x 566, 1080 x 1080, 1080 x 1350 and 1080 x 1440 are all native sizes. Upload narrower than 320 pixels and it is enlarged, which looks soft; upload wider than 1080 and it is scaled down, which is harmless.
Portrait posts take up more of the screen in the feed, which is why 4:5 and 3:4 are the most common choices for photographers and sellers. Stories and Reels are full-screen vertical at 9:16; 1080 x 1920 is the size everyone uses, and the interface overlays the top and bottom, so keep anything important in the middle 1080 x 1420 or so.
Etsy
Etsy wants big photos: at least 2000 pixels on both width and height for listing images, so zoom works. The first photo also decides the shape of the thumbnails for the whole listing, and Etsy recommends it be landscape or square so the centre survives the thumbnail crop. Keep the same shape for every photo in a listing.
Two things catch people out. Files over about 1 MB can fail to upload, especially on slow connections, so export at JPG quality 80 to 85 rather than maximum. And Etsy does not support transparency: a transparent PNG shows a black background. Put your product on a real background, usually white, before uploading. Etsy converts colours to sRGB, so export in sRGB (EditXo does) to avoid colour shifts.
Shopify
Shopify is generous: product and collection images can be up to 5000 x 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, under 20 MB each. It recommends 2048 x 2048 for square product images, and it matters more that every featured image in a collection uses the same aspect ratio, because they sit side by side. Shopify generates the smaller copies each theme needs, so upload one high-resolution master per product rather than several sizes.
Shopify accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF, BMP, GIF and SVG, and serves the best format each visitor’s browser supports. PNG is the right choice when a product has a transparent background; JPG or WebP at quality 85 is right for photographs.
How to produce each size in EditXo
- Open editxo.com and drop in the photo. Nothing is uploaded; the crop and resize run on your device.
- Open the Adjust tab and scroll to Quick Presets at the bottom. They are grouped into Social and Marketplaces, and each button shows its exact pixel size.
- Click the preset you need: Instagram 1:1 or 4:5, Story / Reel 9:16, Etsy square or 4:3, Shopify square or 4:3. Drag on the image to choose what is kept, then confirm. The photo is cropped to the shape and resized to the exact size in one step.
- If your photo is smaller than the target, EditXo enlarges it and shows a warning. Enlarged photos look soft; Etsy and Shopify zoom in, so start from the largest original you have.
- Export: JPG at quality 80 to 85 for Etsy (to stay under 1 MB) and for Instagram; PNG for Shopify if the background is transparent, otherwise JPG at 85.
- Many photos at once: Batch applies the same adjustments and export format to a whole set, but does not crop or resize yet, so run the Quick Preset on each listing photo first.
Resolution versus file size
Pixel dimensions and megabytes are different limits. Etsy’s 1 MB limit is about the file, not the pixels: a 2000 x 2000 JPG at quality 85 is usually 400 to 800 KB, well under it, while the same image as PNG can be 5 MB. Shopify’s 20 MB limit is about the file too, but almost no photo reaches it. Instagram re-compresses everything on upload, so a very large upload gains nothing over 1080 wide; export at 1080 to see on your screen roughly what followers will see.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram still crop everything to square?
No. Instagram keeps any ratio from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait at upload. Only photos outside that range are cropped. Square remains the safest shape for the profile grid.
Why does my Etsy photo look worse after uploading?
Etsy compresses images for page speed and optimises for mobile screens, so some softening is normal. Uploading at least 2000 pixels on each side gives the compression more to work with.
Can I upload a transparent PNG to Etsy?
Etsy does not support transparency; transparent areas appear black. Add a white or coloured background first. Shopify does support transparent PNGs.
Should I upload the biggest file I have to Shopify?
Up to the 5000 x 5000 and 20 MB limits, yes, within reason. Shopify makes the smaller versions it needs. 2048 x 2048 is the recommended square size and is plenty for zoom.
Are these sizes going to change?
They do, occasionally. The date at the top of this page is when the three help pages were last read, and each is linked under Sources so you can check for yourself.
